Three ways to say good morning
| Chinese | Pinyin | Literally | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 早上好 | zǎoshang hǎo | Morning good | Standard and polite: colleagues, teachers, a morning meeting |
| 早安 | zǎo’ān | Morning peace | Warm, a little written: messages, social media, Taiwan |
| 早 | zǎo | Early! | Casual and very common: coworkers, neighbors, friends |
All three characters are the same in Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
早 is the one you will hear most in real life: two colleagues passing in a hallway just say 早!, and the reply is 早!. 早安 is especially common in Taiwan and as a good-morning message on WeChat or LINE.
Pronunciation
- 早上好: zǎoshang hǎo. 早 is third tone; 上 is light and neutral here; 好 ★ is third tone. Roughly "dzao-shahng how".
- 早安: zǎo’ān. The apostrophe in pinyin marks where one syllable ends and the next begins: zǎo-ān, not "zǎ-oān".
- The z sound: pinyin z is like the "ds" in "kids", not an English z. See what is pinyin.
Making it more polite or more personal
- 老师早! (老師早, lǎoshī zǎo) Good morning, teacher! Students greet teachers this way; 老师 ★ is a course word.
- 大家早上好! (dàjiā zǎoshang hǎo) Good morning, everyone! To start a class or a meeting.
- 王经理,早上好。 (Wáng jīnglǐ, zǎoshang hǎo) Good morning, Manager Wang. Title first, then the greeting.
- 早安,宝贝。 (zǎo’ān, bǎobèi) Good morning, baby. To a partner. More in I love you in Chinese.
The rest of the day
| Chinese | Pinyin | English | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 上午好 | shàngwǔ hǎo | Good morning (late morning) | Formal; announcements and meetings |
| 中午好 | zhōngwǔ hǎo | Good day (around noon) | Formal |
| 下午好 | xiàwǔ hǎo | Good afternoon | Formal; rarely said between friends |
| 晚上好 | wǎnshang hǎo | Good evening | Formal, hosts and presenters; friends just say 你好 |
| 晚安 | wǎn’ān | Good night | Only when someone is going to bed |
Outside the morning, most people greet each other with 你好 or by name rather than with a time-of-day greeting.
What people say next
A morning greeting is often followed by a small question about the day:
- 吃早饭了吗? (吃早飯了嗎? chī zǎofàn le ma?) Have you had breakfast?
- 昨晚睡得好吗? (zuó wǎn shuì de hǎo ma?) Did you sleep well last night?
- 今天好冷啊! (jīntiān hǎo lěng a!) It’s so cold today!
Example sentences
| Chinese | Pinyin | English |
|---|---|---|
| 早上好,今天天气真好! | Zǎoshang hǎo, jīntiān tiānqì zhēn hǎo! | Good morning, the weather’s great today! |
| 老师早! | Lǎoshī zǎo! | Morning, teacher! |
| 早安,今天也要加油哦! | Zǎo’ān, jīntiān yě yào jiāyóu o! | Good morning, give it your all today too! |
| 大家早上好,我们开始上课。 | Dàjiā zǎoshang hǎo, wǒmen kāishǐ shàngkè. | Good morning, everyone, let’s start class. |
| 早!你吃早饭了吗? | Zǎo! Nǐ chī zǎofàn le ma? | Morning! Have you had breakfast? |
How to reply
Say it back, matching the form you heard:
- 早! → 早!
- 早上好。 → 早上好。 or 早。
- 早安! → 早安!
- 吃早饭了吗? → 吃了,你呢? (I have, and you?)
Common mistakes
- Saying 早上好 in the afternoon. 早 means early; after about 10 or 11 am, switch to 你好.
- Using 晚安 as "good evening". 晚安 is only for bedtime. As a hello in the evening, say 晚上好 or 你好.
- Skipping the apostrophe in 早安. Without it, zaoan could be misread. Write zǎo’ān.
- Sounding stiff with friends. 早上好 every morning to close friends can feel formal. Try 早.
