Con los números del 0 al 20 y las decenas puedes formar casi cualquier número. Abajo explicamos cómo, y los errores más comunes de quienes hablan español.

Cómo se forman los demás números

  • Del 21 al 99: la decena, un guion y la unidad: twenty-one (21), forty-five (45), ninety-nine (99).
  • Centenas: one hundred (100), two hundred (200). Hundred no lleva s cuando va con un número: "three hundred", no "three hundreds".
  • Con "and": en Estados Unidos one hundred five o one hundred and five (105); las dos formas se oyen.
  • Miles: two thousand twenty-six (2026), fifteen thousand (15,000).
  • Años: se dicen en pares: 1998 es nineteen ninety-eight; 2026 suele decirse twenty twenty-six.

Thirteen o thirty: el acento lo cambia todo

Los números del 13 al 19 terminan en -teen y las decenas en -ty. Suenan muy parecido, y la diferencia está en la sílaba fuerte:

Al dar un precio o una hora, si no te entienden, repite con los dígitos: "fifteen, one five".

Comas, puntos y billion

  • Miles con coma, decimales con punto: en inglés se escribe 1,500 (mil quinientos) y 2.5 (dos punto cinco, "two point five"). En México se escribe igual, pero en España, Argentina, Chile y otros países es al revés (1.500 y 2,5).
  • Billion no es billón. En inglés one billion es 1,000,000,000: mil millones. Un billón en español (un millón de millones) es one trillion en inglés.
  • Cero: zero en general; en números de teléfono y en marcadores también se oye "oh" (como la letra O).

Números ordinales

Los ordinales se usan para fechas, pisos y posiciones. Casi todos terminan en -th (fourth, tenth), salvo first (1st), second (2nd) y third (3rd), y los que terminan en 1, 2 o 3 después del 20: twenty-first (21st), thirty-second (32nd).

En las fechas se dicen con ordinal aunque se escriban sin él: July 4 se dice July fourth.

Errores comunes

  • Decir "one hundreds". Con número delante, hundred, thousand y million van en singular.
  • Traducir billón como billion. Es la confusión más cara: one billion son mil millones.
  • Olvidar la th. Three (3) empieza con la lengua entre los dientes, como la z de España; "tree" es árbol.
  • Usar have para la edad. Se dice I am twenty years old o I am twenty, no "I have twenty years".
